Across the valley a pleasant 10-minute walk from Montescudaio lies the village of Guardistallo, noted for its lovely town square, its vibrant theater and its fine restaurants “Mocajo” and the “Osteria della Pinzagrilli”, with their traditional cuisine, excellent homemade desserts and pastries and large selections of local wines.

Just seven minutes away by car, perched on a hillside overlooking a verdant plain, is the jewel-like village of Casale Marittimo.  Wandering the narrow, winding streets will transport you back to a simpler, slower time; before you know it, the year’s stress is forgotten and you are at peace.  Stop at the Caffe Culturale for a coffee or light meal; who knows, some friends of Marzio and Stefania may be there singing or playing the guitar, accordion or piano.

Ten minutes by car from Dolce Toscana is the charming medieval village of Bibbona, with its 11th-century Church of Saint Ilario, its castle, Etruscan tombs and Roman ruins, its soothing walks through the forest known as the Macchia della Magona and the lovely textile and clothing-optional beaches of Marina di Bibbona with its excellent seaside restaurants and cafes.

Another five minutes by car is the village of Bolgheri, with its stunning cypress-lined approach, its medieval castle of the Counts della Gherardesca, its world-famous Sassicaia and Ornellaia wines and its charming restaurants.

Less than ten minutes by car beyond Bolgheri is Castagneto Carducci, named in honor of Giosue Carducci, one of Italy’s most famous poets.  Perched on a hill overlooking the sea, this lovely village, built around a castle of the della Gherardesca family, brims with life and excitement in the Summer months and offers fine restaurants and wine shops.  For a change of pace, drive down to the seaside resort of Marina di Castagneto and dine at one of the several beachside restaurants and pizzerias.

A half-hour drive from Dolce Toscana offers even more opportunities for culture, history, nature and village life:  The hilltop fortress town of Volterra, the medieval walled village of Suvereto with its original 11th-century church, the stunning cathedral of Massa Marittima, the wild beaches of the National Park of the Rimigliano and the winding, narrow streets of Campiglia Marittima, where every turn reveals new surprises, and you can buy superb homemade panforte, are just a few of the possibilities.  Check here regularly for more details on these and the other exciting experiences a stay at Dolce Toscana offers you.
